Biography

Acclaimed Canadian Songwriter and Multi-Instrumentalist, Joe McLeod has woven a musical tapestry that captures the essence of love, loss, and the breathtaking landscapes of his home in Canada. He has curated an impressive discography, firmly establishing his role as a torchbearer for Canada's rich songwriting legacy. His music has transcended borders, taking him on captivating tours across Canada, Japan, and various European Union countries. The stages he graces include historic venues across Canada, with the notable achievement of headlining the new 500-person capacity TD Music Hall at the iconic Massey Hall.

Guided by influences such as Paul McCartney, Yusef Islam (Cat Stevens), Gord Downie, and Mumford & Sons, Joe McLeod is celebrated for his commanding vocals and the seamless navigation between high-energy anthems and poignant storytelling. His artistic prowess not only earns him opportunities to share stages with global acts but also leaves an enduring imprint on the hearts of audiences worldwide.

In a harmonious tale titled "The Dancer And The Bear," Joe McLeod bares his soul, embracing vulnerability and unearthing a profound honesty within himself. This, his second full-length album, unfolds like a duet of emotions, its first half dancing to upbeat pop rhythms while the latter sways to the introspective melodies of folk. Divided into two halves, The Dancer and The Bear embarks on a heartfelt journey, where Joe's breakup with a long-term partner ignites introspection on life's pursuits and the smallest details that weave the tapestry of happiness. Through melodies and lyrics, Joe paints a canvas of raw emotions, inviting listeners to join him in a cathartic dance with the bear of truth.

Joe’s first album ‘Cloud Berries In Alaska’ is a moving meditation on hope, loss, and survival in the time of COVID. Written in the months following his father’s passing, it addresses the stark realities of our time while retaining the grace, humor, and optimism that have come to define Joe’s career. ‘Cloud Berries In Alaska’ was a major artistic leap forward for a truly unique artist with a vital story to tell.

“Joe McLeod is the embodiment of Canadian: kind, approachable, and down to earth. The singer-songwriter blurs the lines of indie-folk and pop in his diverse lyric writing which brings a refreshing sense of storytelling and youth. ”

Equal parts joy and melancholy, Joe McLeod’s debut album Cloudberries in Alaska serves as a gentle meditation on the bittersweetness of life. Through his music, McLeod processes the passing of his father and reflects on how to find light in difficult times. One moment, he stands still and reflects on lost moments; the next, he focuses on the present and his blooming love. His rich indie-folk sound compliments this message, and his songwriting abilities shine through in his expression of hope and longing. What makes this album so unique is how deeply personal each track is: “1946”, for example, recounts the story of his family legacy and how his father built a life for his family in Ontario. This, along with vivid images of his Canadian home, make the listener feel as though they have been shown a slice of McLeod’s life. His down-to-Earth lyrics and soothing sound have made him a standout musician in the Canadian songwriting scene already – with Cloudberries in Alaska, it seems Joe McLeod is just getting started.
— The Music Enthusiast
“Joe McLeod is a folk-pop singer-songwriter based out of Toronto, Canada. McLeod is the kind of guy who you see while stuck in traffic jamming out in the other car, but when you make eye contact he doesn’t get embarrassed and stop, instead it becomes a private concert for you.”
